As I came across the lake
-for I was over there-
a thin lady waited for me
with dried flowers.
In this delightful and mysterious story, a dissatisfied youngster meets three strange men. At their urging, he sheds his skin, changes his name, washes his face away, and leaves a world with “mountains of rusted waste” to embark on a search for purity and truth.
He meets up witn others who share his search and together they build a community. Looking to nature to meet their needs, they plant turkey feathers, build dams, gather bouquets, and live off the land.
In time, however, the boy discovers there is still much to learn, and that to find truth one may have to face trouble. He picks himself up and returns to life in the real world.
For this story, Etienne Delessert has created masterful drawings that sing with the beauty of New England combined with never-never land. And, in Ashes, Ashes we learn much about a special friend — and about ourselves.
